MARAMAG, Bukidnon:

Five suspected New People’s Army (NPA) rebels were killed in running gunbattles with government forces on Wednesday and Thursday in the hinterlands of Bukidnon province in southern Mindanao, according to the military.

Ten other communist rebels, including three minors, were captured during the two-day firefights, it said also on Thursday.

Maj. Francisco P. Garello Jr., of the Philippine Army’s (PAs) Fourth Infantry Division’s Public Affairs Office, said the four NPA rebels who were killed on Wednesday were buried immediately after one of them was found positive of Covid-19.

Of the insurgents captured, five were women and three were minors aged seven, 12 and 15.

One of the women was brought to a hospital for treatment of gunshot wounds while the minors were turned over to the town’s social welfare office, Garello added.

Lt. Col. Jessie James Docdocil, chief of the Maramag police, said the captured rebels will undergo a background check if they have pending warrants.

According to him, soldiers from the PAs 88th Infantry Battalion were dispatched to the area after receiving reports of the presence of an armed group engaged in “extortion” there.

Garello said 16 high-powered firearms – AK47, M16, M14 and M653 rifles – medicines, ammunition, a motorcycle, backpacks and other personal belongings were recovered from the encounter sites.
