GOSSIP GIRL: Mindanaoan Cinderella Faye Obenita wins Miss Intercontinental 2021 pageant in Egypt

Miss Intercontinental 2021 Cinderella Faye Obenita

Another “bisayang-daku” from Cagayan de Oro, Misamis Oriental has bagged an international crown for the Philippines at the Miss Intercontinental 2021 held in Egypt.

A Mass Communication magna cum laude graduate from Liceo Cagayan Univeristy, Cindy impressed the judges with her brilliant answer in the question and answer portion of the international pageant. The question was if speaking English is important for Miss Intercontinental, this was her impressive answer: “As an ambassador, I don’t think that speaking a specific language is very important here in Miss Intercontinental or any pageant at all. As long as that woman is a woman of power and grace, commitment and intelligence. No matter what language she speaks, and that woman is actually a woman of style and substance, then she can win any pageant or any endeavor she is into. Also, this is very important, I have learned actually here in Miss Intercontinental, that a woman should possess power of substance. And I believe I am that woman because that is the essence of a modern-day Miss Intercontinental – that we are living in a world that’s very hard to survive. And as a Miss Intercontinental, I would like to be that source of hope, that source of inspiration on the true power of beauty and that is felt on the kindness of our hearts and definitely on the sincerity of our loving actions.”

Bravo Cindy! I must say that your answer is a great platform for women to be heard on different levels and more importantly it places you as an icon for leadership and mentorship roles.

This Darna costume styled by CDO designer Odelon Simpao and created by Marc Rodil was worn by our Miss Intercontinental 2021 for the Halloween Party of the candidates held at the Sunrise Diamond Beach Resort last week. In Cindy’s instagram post she writes, ‘As most Filipinos very well know, Darna is one of our fictional heroines who has inspired many generations of dreamers like me. In today’s times, I encourage girls, young and old, to be like Darna in their own ways. Stand up for something worth fighting for.’

During the Bb. Pilipinas coronation night where she was chosen to represent the Philippines for the Miss Intercontinental 2021 in Panama, this was her answer during the Q&A portion when asked about the importance of luxury items for a woman amidst the struggling economy triggered by the pandemic, “I would rather be a woman who understands the problems of the Philippines…and be the one to comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable.” This answer impressed the fans and made her win the People’s Choice Award aside from the Bb. Pilipinas Intercontinental Philippines 2021.

Fashion designer Odelon Simpao uses the Diwata, a mythical goddess in Philippine literature, as an inspiration for the national Costume Cindy paraded in the pageant. Cindy writes in her instagram feed, ‘The whole piece is symbolic of the fighting spirit of this contemporary goddess, the character we will bring to the competition and what Filipinos are known for in the international stage:triumph and prestige.’

In a press interview after the national pageant, she added, “I was talking about different levels of comfort – like people in power and people in business institutions. It meant really helping the marginalized communities. Let’s shake up the status quo. If we have resources, we can leave an impact on them. We’re knocking on the hearts of the privileged – let’s give back, share it and have a meaningful life by helping the underprivileged.” Again, I must say that this Miss International 2021 has used her voice as a channel for behavioral change and used her platform to nudge the people creating government policies and the people who belong to the upper strata of the Philippine population to help the disempowered strata of our country.

And now the 25-year-old tourism officer from Misamis Oriental is now the Miss Intercontinental 2021. Thank you for bringing honor to our country. It is in times like this that we need to see just a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel to give us all hope that there will be a better tomorrow. Your win is everybody’s win here in the Philippines.
