Ray-Ban and Facebook Launch Glasses That Can Take Photos and Videos

Ray-Ban and Facebook have introduced the next step in the evolution of how people interact with the world around them. Ray-Ban Stories are “smart glasses” that can capture photos and videos. That means no more holding your camera up to get that sunset photo or your cat doing funny tricks.

The frames have built-in front-facing cameras and can sync with an app on your phone where you can edit the clips you’ve taken and share them to your Facebook feed, or any other social media app.

Besides a physical button on the glasses, it also has voice recognition technology so you can just say something like “Hey Facebook, take a video.” The content is stored on the glasses until they are downloaded on the app. About 30 videos and 500 photos can be saved on the glasses before you need to delete some to make way for new content.

The glasses also feature discreet speakers on the sides so users can take calls, or listen to music or podcasts.

To address privacy concerns, developers say they installed an LED light on the front side of the frames to let people know that they are being recorded.

“You won’t have to choose between interacting with a device, or interacting with the world around you,” Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in a video to introduce the new device.

The glasses are priced at $299 (about P15,000) and are already available for purchase online and in select retail stores in the US as well as Australia, Canada, Ireland, Italy, and the UK.
