The Voice contestant Rita Martinez, nakaranas ng diskriminasyon dahil sa pagiging lesbian

Ang lesbian at former The Voice Philippines Season 2 contestant na si Rita Martinez ang pinili ng direktor na si Sigrid Andrea Bernardo para maging kapareha ni Rhen Escaño sa kanyang kauna-unahang Girl Love (GL) series project, ang Lulu.

Para kay Rita, malaking karangalan na siya ang napili ni Direk Sigrid bilang isa sa mga bida ng Lulu.

Isang chef at musician ang karakter na gagampanan ni Rita sa GL series na tatampukan nila ni Rhen, at nagkataon namang yun din ang kanyang mga propesyon sa tunay na buhay.

Lahad ni Rita, “When I found out about the series, I was actually honored because they told me that Direk Sigrid will be directing the show.

“And of course, working with amazing people, it’s an honor on my part, especially because this will be my first ever show in my entire life.

“When I read the script, I also told Direk na parang I think it was written exactly for me because sa description pa lang, chef and singer.

“But I still did my due diligence. I submitted everything that I had to and it’s really an honor to be part of the show.”

Nakaranas din si Rita ng diskriminasyon at mga paghuhusga sa kanyang pagkatao dahil sa sexual orientation niya.

“Masakit po siya,” pag-amin niya.

“It’s one of the things na I also explained kina Direk before na, with us, we have to prove ourselves ten times more than everyone else just to be accepted or to gain that respect from people.

“Sinabihan ako before na, ‘Ganyan ka, sinong seseryoso sa ‘yo? Wala kang mararating, walang mangyayari sa buhay mo, kasi walang tatanggap sa ‘yo.’

“It really hit me.”

A REAL LESBIAN FOR A LESBIAN ROLE

Napansin ni Direk Sigrid na mas marami ang gumagawa ng Boys Love (BL) series kaya tungkol sa GL series ang proyekto na naisip niya.

“Konti lang ang GL series so I decided to make a series about girl love naman. And also, I’ve always wanted to make a lesbian film and yung first feature film ko was Ang Huling ChaCha ni Anita, and that was in 2012.

“So I’m very excited to do another project dealing with LGBTQIA+.

“Nagpa-audition kami and isa si Rita sa mga nag-audition. Si Rita, first-time actor but she’s natural.”

Tunay na tomboy ang gusto ni Direk Sigrid na maging love interest ni Rhen sa Lulu dahil sa kanyang paniniwalang nararapat nang bigyan ng pagkakataong magbida sa mga TV series ang mga kababaihang miyembro ng LBTQIA+.

Pahayag ng direktor, “Ang daming nag-audition. Mas na-touch ako actually sa mga nag-audition dahil ang daming talented na members ng LGBTQ community na puwedeng maging artista.

“There are a lot of talented feature actors sa LGBTQ, so bakit hindi sila bigyan ng chance na magbida lalo na ang kuwento naman ay girl love series? Why not cast the real ones na kaya naman na umarte?

“Gusto ko rin i-encourage ang lahat ng producers to discover talents from the LGBTQ community.

“I am not saying that [straight] actors cannot play mga ganitong roles, but they have more avenues, they have more opportunities.

“Gusto ko talaga to create more opportunities for the LGBT community. Hindi lang lagi silang nasa background lang or supporting roles [dahil] kaya rin naman nila magbida.”
