This Luxury Superyacht Concept Has a Gaping Hole in Its Hull

The last thing you want on your ship is a hole in its hull. However, luxury superyacht designer and builder Lazzarini Design does not dabble in the ordinary. It is the designer behind the famous swan-shaped mega yacht concept, the Avanguardia. Its latest concept is called Shape, a superyacht with a gaping hole in the middle, aka its “sun deck.”

The outrageous design breaks fundamental rules of sailing to create a strange and striking appearance.

Lazzarini Design is famous for creating some of the most eccentric and curious superyachts, cars, buildings, gadgets, and prototypes. Founded by Pierpaolo Lazzarini, the company specializes in conceptualizing, designing, modeling, and engineering ideas into reality.

Once built, the Shape will have a length of 69 meters and a beam of nine meters. It will have three floors hidden within its superstructure: The first floor contains the suites, the second floor houses the living area, and the top floor serves as the navigation and control center. There is also a glass-bottom pool on the top deck, which can be seen from the hole in the ship.

Lazzarini Design has not disclosed the cost of the superyacht, nor its speed, propulsion, and range. But based on the design, we can assume it will source some of its power from solar energy.

The company did not specify the purpose of the concept but just let the design speak for itself. Functionally, it is hard to justify a hole in the middle of any ship: Waves could sweep a person overboard with this daring design. Aesthetically, it is perfect: Imagine watching sunsets through this hole or enjoying a tan on its sun deck.
